Steps for Taking Classes Away From Campus ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steps for Taking Classes Away From Campus 1. First, one must obtain a valid proctor within the first two weeks of classes. The proctor must be approved by SSIL (See steps below). Exams cannot be taken without an approved proctor. The earlier you get started the better. If you are not successful in obtaining a proctor, you will have to drop the class. Be aware that you will NOT receive a full refund if you drop the class after the first week of school. Click here for the UO refund schedule. 2. Go to the following web site and read the information pertaining to your class. From the menu at the top of this page, chose Classes for more information about your class. Click the "Classes" button, and then the link for the class you wish to read about. Read the course syllabus thoroughly. 3. Contact the instructor to tell them that you will be taking the class remotely, and ask any additional questions you might have. Their email address should be listed with the class information. 4. If you are taking your tests off-campus, and NOT at the UO Portland Center , you will need to contact your proctor to arrange a time to take a test. DO NOT use the "Make an Appointment" link from your DE user home page. This link is only for those taking tests on-campus. 5. Have you been able to obtain the book for the course? If not follow these instructions: Any course text books or reading packets can be purchased directly from the UO Bookstore in Eugene. Contact the course books manager, Bruce Lundy, at either of the following: phone (541) 434-3220, or e-mail blundy@uoregon.edu . Provide a credit card number to purchase your books. A 10% student discount is granted on most items. Your materials will be mailed to you. 6. The University of Oregon's Continuation Center's website provides additional information about our courses as well as other DE courses on campus. This web site is: 7. Be sure to read all of the information pertaining to distance education courses which are available at: 8. Finally, SSIL charges a fee to students enrolled in courses that utilize the labs as part of their course work. The fee pays for software, printing, consulting support, reserved lab time, and general class support. For the online courses, the fee pays for the proctoring services the lab provides for the course and the programming services that help us implement the testing. The revenues generated by the fees are put directly back into the SSIL labs. The revenues pay for hardware upgrades, software and software upgrades, server maintenance, paper and consultant wages.
How to Obtain a Remote Proctor These steps should be completed by the second week of the term. If you wish to submit a remote proctor form for Summer term, the link to the remote proctor form is here. Again, the form needs to be completed by week 2 of the current term. 1. The Social Science Instructional Lab (SSIL), through the Distance Education Program, coordinates remote proctor sites for students enrolled in social science-related distance education courses through the University of Oregon or the UO Continuing Education Program. A remote proctor site serves as a secure location for the student to take online exams in a place that routinely provides secure testing services for individuals. Examples of acceptable remote proctor sites include community learning centers, distance education centers, continuing education sites, testing centers, and other verifiable locations. 2. SSIL will only verify ONE remote proctor per term for you to take all your tests from. Please find a proctor you can use throughout the term. 3. Check with educational institutions (Universities, community colleges, and high schools) in your local area and contact one of the offices listed above to see if there is a person who is willing to proctor you. Use the internet sites for these institutions and search for “testing center” or “assessment center”. One other useful resource is the National College Testing Association. We also maintain a list of remote sites that students have successfully used in previous terms. You can access this list here. 4. In addition, the internet access CANNOT be via a modem. It should be a DSL or Ethernet connection. 5. Please try to find a suitable proctor candidate as soon as possible. This should be done by the second week of the term. You must submit the remote proctor site contact information and a verifiable website address via this form. Contact the individual who has agreed to serve as the remote proctor to confirm their availability and contact information. SSIL will contact that person to verify the information below and discuss remote proctor responsibilities. All information on the form must be completed before your request can be processed. Remember, it is very important that you submit the remote proctor site information and a verifiable website address ASAP. 6. SSIL needs to verify the proctor before you can use the proctor. All tests must be administered through our Internet testing system. 1.
